Occasionally on the podcast the Good Doctors may inadvertently / deliberately utter something which sits outside of the BBCs remit to broadcast. At this point Robin has been know dub the sounds of bird twittering over the offending utterences. This was first used in November 2016 when Mark chose to vent about the Trumplesome fact that a certain businessman / reality TV personality / megalomaniac / odd hair enthusiast had been voted in as President-elect in the United States.

As well as to censor Mark, the birdsong is also now used to cover cussing in clips that are played of movies. The amount of birdsong in the clip for Three Billboards Outside Epping, Essex was more than the dialogue that was audible.

An ornithologistically inclined listener identified the birdsong used as coming from the following species:

  • Robin
  • Blackbird
  • Rook
  • House sparrow

Birdsong FM, a digital radio station that evolved out of the test broadcasts from the digital radio system, has chosen not to claim royalties so far.
