A genre of horror film that has long periods of very little, or nothing at all, happening, followed by something "shocking". The start of this film phenomenon in recent years was triggered by the enormous success of Paranormal Activity - followed by Parasnormal Inactivity 2, Insidious, Sinister and so on. However, as far back 2005 - indeed, in the historic first ever podcasted episode, no less - Mark described the number-one film in the Box Office Top 10, Boogeyman, as "quiet - bang; quiet - bang; quiet - bang."

The technique of forcing the audience to jump by a loud noise is also referred to as Cattle Prod Cinema
